Trainee and Intern Maximum Program Lengths

If you already read about Intern and Trainee categories you know that the Trainee and Intern Visa Categories have maximum program lengths. The Intern programs have a maximum duration of 12 months, and Trainee programs have a maximum duration of 18 months.

There are some exceptions to these limits. These exceptions are based off of the occupational category your program will be in. If you’re not sure if you will be subject to these limits, check with your sponsor.

Maximum Program Lengths

Intern:

  • Education – 10 month maximum.
    • Examples include: Teaching Internships, Curriculum Development, School Administration.

Trainee:

  • Education – 12 month maximum.
    • Examples include: Teaching Internships, Curriculum Development, School Administration.
  • Agriculture – 12 month maximum.
    • If there are 6 months of classroom education in your original training outline, it is possible to have an 18 month program.
    • Examples include: Turf-grass Management, Agricultural Business Management, Food Science.
  • Hospitality and Tourism – 12 month maximum.
    • Examples Include: Hospitality Administration, Tourism and Travel Services Management,.

These limits are from the Department of State, and not something your sponsor has control over. Make sure to check before you make any plans. If you expect to be gone for 18 months but are only allowed 12, you don’t want to find out right before you leave!
